This year, the history of the Belle Arti Prize will be celebrated with Le Belle Arti, an exhibition featuring all the past winners of the Belle Arti Prize. Tunni Kraus (VIC) 2016, Tony Lloyd (VIC) 2014, Karen Black (Qld) 2013, Marie Hagerty (ACT) 2012, 2011, Lewis Miller (VIC) 2010 and Jacqui Stockdale (VIC) 2009 will be coming together in presenting new works alongside their original 35 x 35cm winning canvas.

Le Belle Arti promises to be an inspirational and exciting show and one to be marked in the calendar. By applauding those winners of the past, the exhibition will celebrate the ongoing partnership between Chapman and Bailey and P.E.R Belle Arti Linen, the history of the Prize and the quality art materials they promote, the artists evolving practice, and Chapman and Bailey’s continuing commitment to the Victorian and wider Australian art community.

The 2016 Belle Arti Prize Exhibition

receivedOver 270 entries from across Australia have been received for the 2016 Belle Arti Art Prize.

All entrants were given an identical 35 x 35cm canvas, a limited time frame, and total creative carte blanche.

The award is a $5000 acquisitive prize.

Previous winners of the Belle Arti Prize are Jackie Stockdale 2009, Lewis Miller 2010, Marie Hagerty 2011/2012 and Karen Black 2013, Tony Lloyd 2014.

Our team is in the process of hanging what will be an amazing sight on the opening night.

We have been overwhelmed by the amount of creative energy and diversity shown in the entries we have received.

The exhibition will be a floor to ceiling contemporary salon hang, a snap shot of the richness and diversity of arts practice in Australia.

The judges of the 2016 Belle Arti Prize will be:

  • Linda Michael, Deputy Director and Senior Curator Heide Museum of Modern Art. Curator of Wrong Way Time by Fiona Hall, 2015 Venice Bienalle
  • John Young, well known Australian artist
  • Mark Chapman, CEO of Chapman & Bailey

    The winner of the  $5000 Belle Arti Prize will be announced at the opening next Wednesday 13th of July, 6-8pm at Chapman & Bailey Gallery, 350 Johnston St, Abbotsford, Melbourne.

    There will also be a Peoples’ Choice Award where visitors can vote for their favorite work over the duration of the exhibition.

    The exhibition will run from 13 July to the 27 August.

    The winner of the Peoples’ Choice Award will be announced in early September.

Artists! Time is ticking! But you still have until 5pm Friday 24th June 2016 to pay your entry fee and collect you free entry canvas. Register online details of your finished masterpiece for the exhibition before 28th June. Remember only one finished entry per artist!

Collect your beautiful 35 x 35cm Belle Arti Linen Entry Canvas at any Belle Arti Prize Collection Point.

Entrants can choose from 3 types of stretched linen for their entry canvas:
Universal Primed Stretched Canvas (U) (suitable for all mediums)
Oil Primed Stretched Canvas (OP) (suitable for oil painting, not acrylic painting)
Clear Sized Stretched Canvas (G) (Not primed. Sized only -not white. Linen surface suitable for any medium).

The Belle Arti Prize Entry Canvas is a professional quality linen canvas, stretched by hand with Italian Belle Arti linen. It is a great opportunity to experience the difference of painting on this beautifully crafted product.

You will know the exact type of linen your canvas is stretched with by looking at the number and letter written on the back if you enjoyed the experience and would like to order this type linen in the future from your local Belle Arti linen supplier.

The Belle Arti Prize exhibition opening and judging will take place at the spacious Chapman & Bailey Gallery, Abbotsford, Melbourne on Wednesday 13th July 2016 between 6-8pm. The 2016 Belle Arti Prize is a $5000 acquisitve prize.
